Harvey, Puerto Rico Update

Saturday, December 16, 2017

Dear Friends,

Hurricane Harvey

Val Verde Baptist

Val Verde Baptist Church has always been a strong and aggressive church.  Because of Hurricane Harvey many of their congregation have been greatly burdened.  ORH discovered that one of their Christian school teachers, Britney Gullickson, lost her automobile due to Harvey.  ORH was able to help her secure a used car so that she can continue teaching at the school without taking extra work to afford a car.  Thank God for all of you who have made this possible.

Victory Baptist Church

Pastor David Cripps of Victory Baptist Church had many people greatly impacted by Harvey.  Three families have yet to return to their homes.  ORH was able to send these families financial encouragement.  Pray that the families will be able to return to their homes soon.  Pastor Cripps is a good man and pastor for the people of Victory.

Puerto Rico

Paula Van Natta

Paula Van Natta is a missionary in Puerto Rico with Baptist World Missions.  Recently she brought to the attention of ORH the need of families in one of the mountain regions of Puerto Rico.  One family is an older couple who needs repair to their home.  ORH is waiting now for the repair costs to be finalized so help can be provided.  Thank you so much for praying for the situations.

“Hello Br. Milton, Paula here in Puerto Rico. Look there is a faithful couple in our church who are retired, he seems to be in beginning stages of Alzheimer.  They have severe roof damage and FEMA is only offering them a low interest loan to repair the roof. Would Operation Hope be able to help with supplying building materials to fix their house? FEMA hasn't even covered the house with a tarp yet.  Building supplies are scarce...a wooden tin roof is what will be installed again.... Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Hello Bro. Milton!

Here's the list of materials...the family is more than grateful and ever humbled by whatever you are able to do. The construction will begin in January Lord willing.”

The cost of the roof repair and materials at present is about $5000.00.  Please pray for this couple.  Thank God for Paula.

Pastor Javier Donatiu

Pastor Donatiu wrote ORH about the needs for his church, Calvary Baptist Church.  ORH was able to send $2500.00 to help with repairs.  Pastor Donatiu wrote the following.

“Our church is located in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, ….  By the grace of God, we have 60 faithful members. By the passing of Hurricane Maria through P.R., our church had some significant damages to the structure. We lost the ceiling of our youth classroom, our storage ceiling was also destroyed. The windows of our Sunday School classroom were damaged and other structures were destroyed as well (light poles, church sign etc.)  We believe God has called us to keep working for Him through hard times and that's why we want to restore our church, God's church, to continue the work He has called us to do. Thank you so much for your help!”

JEREMY MARKLE

Although our air flights have ceased, we are still concerned about the need for food and supplies for the people of Puerto Rico.  It is wonderful that men like Jeremy Markle of Baptist World Mission is concerned about this.  ORH was able to send $1200.00 dollars for Brother Markle to purchase food and distribute.  He is working on another food distribution now to the people.  ORH also bought 400 water filters through Allen Copeland who delivered them to Brother Markle to distribute to the people.  Pray for him as he labors to help the churches and the people of Puerto Rico.

The following is a series of texts from Brother Markle.

“We made some purchases of some supplies. Here are the receipts for now. We already distributed some to one pastor and another is coming tomorrow.  We will need a little time to see the need for future purchases. We are taking it one day at a time to see how needs develop. Thank you so much for your help.

Good morning. I wanted to drop you a quick not to let you know that I received 400 filters yesterday from brother Copland.

Good evening. I just had contact with one of the pastors in a more rural area and he is asking for a few more supplies. We are hoping to get together for some things on Wednesday. Thankfully the other pastors are doing ok.”
